VMware ESXi hosts can passthrough devices from the host to the guest operating system. This allows making use of the physical hardware inside the guest operating system. This can be done for performance, hardware, or other requirements. Perhaps one of the more common devices to passthrough from the ESXi host to a virtual machine is a USB device.

As a type-1 hypervisor, ESXi is not a software application that is installed on an operating system (OS); instead, it includes and integrates vital OS components, such as a kernel. A virtual machine can be configured with one or more virtual Ethernet adapters. A virtual switch enables virtual machines on the same ESXi host to communicate with each other using the same protocols used over physical switches, without the need for additional hardware. A virtual switch is connected to physical switches by using physical Ethernet adapters to join virtual networks with physical networks. Two connection types are possible on a virtual switch in vSphere: 1. virtual machine port groups – ports used to connect virtual machines to other VMs or the physical network. 2.
